Case description

An annual recurring project from Beyond Reality is the Game AR Agenda.

This agenda is a custom, digitally painted school agenda which is complemented with an app. With this app you can play various Augmented Reality games on the pages.


With each agenda we try to go with what is a popular gaming genre at the moment. For example in 2014 we looked at Grand Theft Auto and in 2015 we looked at zombie games.

Themed by that genre we create a short, visual story which we can lay out in de drawings and in the games.

The games are designed to be short, fun games with highscores, so you can compete with your friends.

Stages of the painting proces

01.Digital painting

The cover of the agenda and 4 'spreads' (double pages inside the agenda) are designed and digitally painted.

Parts from these paintings are layered so they can be reused in the rest of the agenda as extra visuals.

02.Designing the Agenda

The paintings and seperate elements are put together into the agenda.

Colors are picked, layouts are made, the agenda is printed.

03.Game Design

While work is being done on the agenda, another part of the team is working on the games and the app.

We try to design each game to be a fun, short game which can be played over and over again. Ideal for breaks in between classes.

04.Augmented Reality

What makes this agenda extra special is the AR.

We combine all the elements from before (paintings, games) into one awesome app using Augmented Reality.

Augmented Reality means we use the camera from the phone to keep track of the painting and place an extra layer on top of that, in this case the games.
